Prairie Wind Farm gets green light for environmental approval

Prairie Wind Farm receives environmental approval from the Commonwealth Government under the EPBC Act.

March 11, 2025

We are thrilled to announce that the Prairie Wind Farm, a key project within the North Queensland Super Hub, has received environmental approval from the Commonwealth Government under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

This significant milestone is the culmination of approximately four years of detailed and responsible design, over two years of rigorous environmental assessment, and ongoing stakeholder engagement.

Situated in the Flinders Shire, Prairie Wind Farm will generate enough clean, affordable energy to power one in every six Queensland homes.

It will also help eliminate nearly three million tonnes of carbon emissions annually from Australia’s energy sector—making a meaningful contribution to our collective sustainability goals.

The project will also deliver significant economic benefits, bringing an estimated $400 million into regional Queensland and creating around 500 jobs during construction. That’s a real boost for local businesses, suppliers, and workers.

Our connection with the Flinders Shire began over a decade ago with the pioneering Kennedy Energy Park. Today, through a Joint Development Agreement with Fortescue, we are proud to lead the development of the North Queensland Super Hub, writing the next chapter in the region’s renewable energy journey. We are incredibly proud to have played a leading role in advancing the Prairie Wind Farm, a project that aligns with both regional and national ambitions for a sustainable future.

We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Flinders Shire community as we take this next step toward a clean energy future for North Queensland.

Stay tuned for more updates as the project moves forward!
